Market Community rallies to help with Pontypridd Foodbank appeal

When the Pontypridd Foodbank put out an urgent call on social media, letting the community know their shelves were "bare" and they were desperate for donations, the hearts of the Market Quarter Pontypridd traders immediately went out, they knew they had to help their neighbours.

A quick post went up on the Market Quarter Facebook page, appealing to our local community to help us restock the Foodbank’s pantry. What happened next was truly humbling.

The response from the people of Pontypridd was unprecedented. We quickly learned that the Market Quarter offered a much-needed, central collection point. So many local residents who came in with bags of groceries mentioned that they don't drive and can't easily use the usual drop-off points at supermarkets. Being centrally located in the heart of town meant many could walk in and deliver their donations directly.

The kindness of locals was absolutely overwhelming. Within days, the generosity of our community had translated into physical support:

* Our first haul of donated items weighed in at a massive 110 kg of food.

* Our second collection contributed another 23.20 kg to the Foodbank.

* Our third collection total is awaited

Every single tin, box of cereal, and packet of pasta was a testament to the caring spirit of Pontypridd.

To keep the momentum going and raise awareness among the younger generation, our creative traders put together a brilliant idea: a "lucky dip drive" featuring our new mascot, Tim the Tin!

Tim the Tin was lovingly created by the wonderful Hayley Tucker at Tucker's Bakery. We invited local children to bring in a tin of food or make a small cash donation for a chance to play the lucky dip. It was a simple, fun way to teach children about the Foodbank's vital services and the importance of helping others. The lucky dip was a roaring success! Along with the physical tins collected, the children and their families helped us raise a fantastic total of £216.86 in cash for the Foodbank's operational needs.

We couldn't be prouder of the compassion and generosity shown by our customers and fellow traders. We love our community and are thrilled to have been able to make a small, but meaningful, difference during a difficult time.

The Market Quarter Pontypridd is happy to continue to act as a permanent, central drop-off point for the Foodbank.

Please feel free to hand in your non-perishable donations at any stall—our traders will ensure they are safely passed to the collection point. You can also find collection tins around the market for any cash donations you wish to make.

Announcing the Passing of Former Chairman David Stradling John

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David Stradling John, beloved son of Alfred Stradling John, who served as the esteemed Chairman of Pontypridd Market Company from 1987 to 2007. David's passing leaves a profound legacy within our market community.

David was a pivotal figure in the history of Pontypridd Market, instrumental in driving the initial modernisation efforts that helped shape it, having the foresight to add modern facilities. His vision and dedication during his two decades as Chairman laid crucial groundwork, ensuring the market's continued success and evolution. We are incredibly grateful for his immense contributions and leadership.

Funeral Details:

David's funeral will take place on Wednesday 4th June, 2025 at Glyntaf Crematorium at 11:00 am

A Message from the Family:

David's family would like to take this opportunity to express their heartfelt thanks for the many kind messages and support they have received during this difficult time.

To mark Love Your Local Market Fortnight (16th to the 31st May), Pontypridd Market Quarter and Your Pontypridd Bid invite you to enter a competition capturing the community, culture and personality of our famous market.

For this competition, open to all, we want you to design a postcard celebrating Ponty Market . You can use any medium; a photograph, a painting, a sketch, as long as it expresses one of the themes below and impresses the judges with your creativity.

Winners will have their postcard professionally printed and distributed during Love Your Local Market Fortnight . They will also receive a prize voucher to spend in the Market. Two winners will be chosen from each age category.

Age 8 and under

Ages 9 - 16

Age 17 and over

What are we looking for?

We are looking for designs that look great and can be printed with on an A6 Postcard , 14.8 x 10.5 cm (Please note we may need to change the dimensions of your image if it does not fit this ratio) . You can submit your entry as a digital image (JPEG) or as a hard copy.

Your design will reflect one of the four following themes;

Everyday life in the market

People in the market

Favourite spots in the market

Bought in the market

The judges will be looking for images that make them smile, entries that show creativity and postcard designs that unequivocally represent Pontypridd Market Quarter.

How do I enter?

Entries can be emailed to pontypriddmarketcommunity@gmail.com or hard copies can be posted in our postbox which will be located at Sugar and Spice (toy shop)

Please include your name, age or age bracket, contact telephone and chosen theme in your email or write it on the back of your hard copy.

The competition is open until Thursday the 22nd May and winners will be announced that weekend.

What happens to my design?

Some of the best designs may be posted on our social media channels or feature in promotion of the market.

If you are selected as a winner, your design will be printed and distributed to customers at the Market Quarter, during the second week of Love Your Local Market whilst stocks last. These postcards will be limited one per customer.

Love Your Local Market fortnight 2025 is almost upon us and we can't wait!

The Market Quarter Pontypridd is excited to be part of this year's Love Your Local Market ( LYLM) campaign, a nationwide celebration of community, creativity and commerce proudly run by NABMA - The National Association of British Market Authorities.

The 2025 campaign takes place from Friday 16th to Saturday 31st May 2025 with hundreds of markets across the country joining in the celebrations and showcasing their specialties.

This years campaign theme is "Made by Markets" - reflecting everything that local markets nurture: new businesses, fresh food, community spirit, local culture, sustainable choices, and inclusive spaces. It's about recognising that what we love most about our towns is often built right here, at the market.

The Market Quarter Pontypridd plan to kick off this years celebrations for LYLM fortnight with a very special live music event!

We'll be launching a community art competition "Put your stamp on it! - Pontypridd Market postcard competition", inviting schools and the local community to design a postcard from Pontypridd Market. There are prizes to be won and the winning design will be made into Pontypridd Market postcards. This competition is kindly run in partnership with Your Pontypridd BID (entry details coming soon)

Two community benches will be transformed by local artist, Swan Prints, and installed within the market as an invitation to "Sit and Share", to encourage kindness in the community, a safe space to make a friend or just take time to be mindful.

Keep your eyes peeled across social media where we'll be showcasing the amazing specialty produce and services on offer from our wonderful community of stallholders, from new traders to well established favourites.

Market Magic - A day Pontypridd will never forget

Today, February 26th, our historic Market Quarter was transformed into a scene of vibrant excitement and royal charm as we welcomed the Prince and Princess of Wales! The crowds gathered early, a sea of eager faces, all buzzing with anticipation to catch a glimpse of William and Kate - they certainly didn't disappoint!

The air crackled with excitement as the Royal Couple arrived, their presence radiating warmth and genuine interest in our community. The visit, just ahead of St David's Day, felt particularly special, a wonderful way to celebrate our Welsh heritage.

One of the highlights of their visit was undoubtedly their stop at The Welsh Cake Shop, a beloved institution in Pontypridd Market. Under the expert guidance of Theresa Conner, William and Kate gamely tried their hand at making our traditional Welsh cakes. Flour flew, laughter echoed, and the aroma of freshly baked treats filled the air. It was a truly delightful spectacle, witnessing the future King and Queen embracing our local traditions with such enthusiasm.

But amidst the fun and festivities, there was also a moment for reflection and connection. The Royal Couple took the time to speak with local business owners about the devastating impact of Storm Bert and Darrah on Pontypridd whilst enjoying refreshments at The Fountain Cafe.

Beyond the culinary delights and heartfelt conversations, the day was filled with heart warming interactions with the public. Amongst those waiting to catch a glimpse of William and Kate were residents from a local care home, some in wheelchairs, who had waited patiently all morning, their faces beaming with joy. Their dedication was rewarded with a special moment as they serenaded the royal couple with a beautiful song, a truly touching display of community spirit. William spent time chatting and holding hands with some of the residents as he thanked them for their song and how he appreciated the long wait.

The Royal visit was a whirlwind of smiles, handshakes, and shared moments. William and Kate took the time to connect with as many of the waiting crowd as possible including children dressed in traditional Welsh costumes who offered flowers to the Princess. William also shared some of the Welsh cakes the couple had baked with the crowd.

Today's visit was more than just a royal appearance; it was a celebration of Pontypridd's spirit, a testament to our resilience, and a reminder of the power of community. The Prince and Princess of Wales certainly brought a touch of magic to our Market Quarter, leaving behind a trail of smiles and cherished memories.

As we look forward to St David's Day, we can't help but feel a renewed sense of pride in our Welsh heritage and a deep appreciation for the Royal Couple's visit. It was a day that will be etched in the hearts of Pontypridd residents for years to come.

From Palace to Pontypridd - a Royal Market Day

Break out the Bara Brith, hold onto your Welsh cakes! Because this Wednesday, February 26th, we're getting a royal visit that's going to sprinkle a bit of magic (and maybe some icing sugar!) over The Market Quarter!

That's right, folks, Prince William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales themselves, are popping by! Forget your mid-week slump, this is going to be huge!

Imagine: William and Kate strolling through our beloved Food Hall, soaking up the atmosphere, and… wait for it… trying their hand at flipping Welsh cakes at The Welsh Cake Shop! Will they be golden brown perfection or a slightly charred masterpiece? We'll have to wait and see!

But it's not all about the delicious treats. Our royal guests are also taking the time to visit the Fountain Cafe, where they'll be chatting with our amazing local business owners. They'll be hearing first hand about the challenges they face especially with the recent flooding.

As the shortlist for Britain's Favourite Market 2025 has been revealed in the Great British Market Awards. Pontypridd Market are thrilled to have been nominated by public vote and are amongst the TOP TEN Markets shortlisted for the prestigious award organised by National Association of British Market Authorises (NABMA).

Our market community are excited to move forward to the next stage of the competition and honoured to have been shortlisted with only one other Market in Wales nominated.

First Minister spends time with stallholders

Eluned Morgan the new First Minister for Wales paid a surprise visit to The Market Quarter last week, 8th August, as part of a walk about in Pontypridd. The First Minister was accompanied by her Deputy Huw Irranca-Davies MS, Mick Antoniw MS, Alex Davies-Jones MP and Councillor Andrew Morgan. The visit coincided with Eisteddfod celebrations in the town and certainly added to the buzz and sense of occasion. The First Minister spent time chatting with stall holders and members of the public around the Market.

Thanks to Pontypridd Town Council, Your Pontypridd and Father Christmas of course, the Santa's Grotto in will be located in The Market Quarter Food Hall, near Bevans Butchers and Tuckers Bakery.

Make your child’s Christmas extra special with a visit to see Santa in his magical grotto

A 50p donation per child going to the Town Mayor's Charity Appeal.

The Market Quarter Vision

The Indoor Market is made up of five unique halls all with their own architectural style, scale and detail. Here one can create bespoke environments, each tailored for the nature of sector or product lines contained within. The five distinctive areas will be known as The Food Hall, The Street Food Market, The Central Hall, The Farmers Market and The Penuel Arcade.

THE FOOD HALL

The original market hall will become The Food Hall and is planned to be the first section to be completed. It is anticipated that when finished the Food Hall will become the catalyst for the quarter as a whole, acting as a commercial stimulus for all the other sections in turn to thrive. Here one will find high-end food outlets housed in twelve modern units, all individually designed and all in their own settings. Each unit will be bespoke and tailored to the need of the user. It is envisaged that when completed The Food Hall will have more than a dozen skilled operators including a butcher, delicatessen, baker, tapas bar etc. With the shrinkage of product lines offered by supermarkets the need for specialist food outlets has never been greater, and given the beautiful environment in which they will be housed means The Food Hall will be a major attraction.

THE STREET FOOD MARKET

The Street Food Market will be a visually stimulating urban food court, with gritty modern architecture and planting creating a bustling, contemporary ambience. Here various ethnic and artisan restaurants/cafes on the parameter will surround rustic seating areas. Food will be served eat- in or takeaway food, all day and into the night, with all forms of entertainment to enhance the atmosphere.

THE CENTRAL HALL

The Central Hall, as its name suggests, will be the heart of the market quarter. In this area two short corridors will open up to a large colonnaded square. Here retail outlets will be housed in a traditional courtyard space, all branded and designed in their own individual style. One will find a selection of niche outlets ranging from a traditional confectioner to hand crafted mother and baby wear producer. In the centre of the square will be the beautiful contemporary coffee shop and café and also the markets longest run café, the Copper Kettle.

THE FARMERS MARKET

Adjacent to The Food Hall will be The Street Food Market. Here the existing hall will be transformed into a visually stimulating urban food court, with gritty modern architecture and planting creating a bustling, contemporary ambience. Here various ethnic and artisan restaurants/cafes on the parameter will surround rustic seating areas. Food will be served eat- in or takeaway food, all day and into the night, with all forms of entertainment to enhance the atmosphere.

THE PENUAL ARCADE

The long elongated space which has been traditionally known as the Fish Market will be rebuilt as The Penuel Arcade. Here as the name suggests an elegant arcade of retailers and service providers will take the customer from The Farmers Market through to Church Street at the south end of the quarter. Beautifully presented boutique shops will sell everything from furniture to fashion wear. A recent article by Wales Online author Kathryn Williams touches on the history of Pontypridd indoor market and the future of 'The Market Quarter' as we continue to invest and grow the new era of the beloved indoor market.

The article gives a wonderful insight from our current traders, some who have been with us a long time and others just starting out.

“I’ve been here five years now and every year I have seen trade increase. People assume that the markets are dying but I’ve seen bigger footfall every year and it’s fantastic,” says Theresa from The Welsh Cake Shop.

She adds: “Opinion, for years, was that the market was dated and wasn’t really offering much but that has turned around, certainly since I’ve been here. The stalls here offer a lot more variety. You’ve got the vegan stall, artisan bakers, different things and the younger stall holders really make a difference as well.

“And people prefer to buy locally and you get to know the customers and have a laugh and a joke. You see them coming and you know what they want – sometimes you get it ready for them before they come. They come out for that interaction, a lot of the older people.

“If they can continue what they’ve done in here all the way through and round the back, it will be a winner for the town.”

We have started, and continue to upgrade not just the actual individual areas of the Market Quarter, of which there are five; The Food Hall , Central Hall , Penuel Arcade , Farmers Market and Toy Emporium but rebrand each individual business, redesign it, style it uniquely and bespoke to the product which they sell.

All this development is part of a process that will take time. We hope that within the next 10 years we will have the complete package where every area will be different and unique and every business there will be a top quality an operation as good as you’d find anywhere on the continent.
